ULTIMAK AK 47 mount

ULTIMAK AK 47 mount

ULTIMAK AK 47 mount

The ULTIMAK M1-B AK-47 Scout mount is the lightest AK scope mounting system available, coming in at barely an ounce more than the gas tube that it replaces. It is also the lowest mounting rail, allowing cowitnessing of optical sights with the rifle’s iron sights. It clamps to the rifle’s barrel using two 4140 steel u-clamps secured by four bolts and includes vent holes. The manufacturer claims it rarely if ever needs to be removed from the rifle for cleaning so loss of zero is not a problem. The precision machined 6061-T-6 aluminum rail does not interfere with side folding stock and the MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail system interfaces with almost all optics and accessories available today. Fitting may require some chiseling/dremmelling of the existing handguard. Replacing the gas tube means this mount does get hot and you need to keep bare flesh away from the mount during and after sustained firing. The heat should not be a problem with quality optics, but you may not want to subject your Aimpoint T-1 to sustained full auto fire with this mounting system. For most users this will not be a problem. The M1-B scout mount fits almost all AK series rifles from the Eastern Bloc and China. The only exception are Romanian 5.45 and 5.56mm rifles that require a special SH-1 shim set available from ULTIMAK. The ULTIMAK M1-B AK mount is fast gaining a reputation as the most solid AK mounting system available. As the mount clamps to the barrel, some owners have even reported an increase in the inherent accuracy of their AKs.

Surgeon short round action

Surgeon short round action

The Surgeon Short Round Action is machined from high-grade stainless steel to excedptionally tight tolerances to create some of the most accurate and consistent actions available. The bolt is machined from a single stainless steel billet with the bolt and its raceways cut with wire EDM for extreme precision.

This action is fitted with a side mounted bolt stop and will work with many different magazine conversion and chassis systems. It will fit any stock that would fit a Remington 700 short action. The Surgeon Rem 700 short round action includes a double-pinned 0.250″ recoil lug for maximum stability. MDT TAC-21 Chassis Review

MDT TAC-21 Remington 700 chassis

MDT TAC-21 Remington 700 chassis

The MDT TAC-21 is a chassis system for the Remington 700 bolt action rifle. It gives the Remington 700 AR15 like ergonomics and versatility of accessory placement. There is an integral 20 MoA Picatinny rail along the entire top of the action housing. The rail along the fore-end is parallel to the barrel, not sloping.

MDT TAC-21 components

The TAC-21 takes any AR15 or M16 stock or pistol grip and uses AICS style .223 or .308 magazines.

There are threaded mounting points on the fore end to take Magpul L3 (7 slot) or L5 (11 slot) Picatinny rail sections. The whole unit is engineered to impart the least possible stress to the rifle action and none at all to the barrel. The unit only touches the receiver on the V-profile bedding and the recoil lug area.

The chassis can be bedded, but it is not strictly necessary. The fore end allows barrel diameters of up to 1.35″, enabling almost any Remington 700 barrel profile to be used. The TAC-21 is machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and mil-spec hard anodized. It weighs 3lb 0.5 oz.

VLTOR M1A Stock Review

VLTOR M1A stock

VLTOR M1A stock in matte black

The VLTOR M1A stock is intended for both Springfield M1A, M1A SOCOM II and USGI M14 rifles and is available in versions with and without the selector cut out. The VLTOR CAS14 railed handguard system was selected by Springfield Armory as the rail interface system for their M1A SOCOM II carbine. They rechristened it the Springfield Cluster Rail. VLTOR have now introduced an M1A Modstock to match the CAS14 and bring the M1A into the 21st Century.

VLTOR M1A stock

VLTOR M1A stock in Flate Dark Earth (tan)

The VLTOR M14 stock is easy to install and greatly improves its handling qualities. The stock is essentially a USGI fiberglass stock with a machined aluminum adapter. This has an AR syle receiver extension/buffertube which is fitted with the VLTOR EMod stock. The adapter is cleverly designed to allow one inch of vertical adjustment which enables the use of iron sights or optics. The molded polymer EMod stock is a “clubfoot” stock that supports conventional or “bazooka” style holds and has no less than three waterproof battery or spares compartment. Two of these are removable saddle type compartments that can each hold three AA or two CR123 batteries. The other is a trapdoor type in the bottom of the stock which can hold a further two AA batteries. There is a molded in sling loop in the top rear of the comb and a receptacle for an ambidextrous push button sling swivel. There are five length of pull settings from 10½” to 14″.

VLTOR EMOD in Flat Dark Earth (tan)

VLTOR EMOD in Flat Dark Earth (tan)

The stock offers great cheek weld and handling and the fore end, butt and pistol grip are aggressively textured to ensure a firm hold. The pistol grip has yet another storage compartment for small items and is sealed by a rubber cap. As the SOCOM 16 stock extension doesn’t hold a buffer spring, it contains yet another storage compartment that can take a cleaning kit. The butt has a removable, half inch thick rubber pad and an aluminum strike plate. As the M1A VLTOR stock is designed to take the Springfield Cluster Rail or VLTOR CAS14 handguard, this stock does not have a forward sling swivel. The VLTOR M1A SOCOM stock is available in Black or Flat Dark Earth (tan).

Note that there may be problems fitting the VLTOR M1A stock to Match, Heavy Barrel, Additional/Improved Bedding Lug, M21 and M25 type rifles. You need to speak to VLTOR or a qualified gunsmith before purchasing.

VLTOR CASV Review

VLTOR CASV rail system

VLTOR CASV EL rail system

The VLTOR CASV is unusual in offering a continuous length of Picatinny Rail that attaches to the top of the existing flat top on carbine length gas systems. The carbine’s existing sight tower can be retained but the bottom sling swivel (if fitted) must be removed. This gives a slightly raised mounting of optics and back-up iron sights. The CASV hand guard comes with five additional rails – one 6″, two 4″ and two 2″ that can be bolted on at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions and the two lower 45° positions. This enables you to add and detach rails as you wish and provides great versatility in the positioning of accessories. You can easily detach the bottom half of the CASV RIS to mount an M203 grenade launcher.

No gunsmithing is required to fit the CASV quad rail which attaches to the flat-top Picatinny rail and the barrel nut. VLTOR recommed that you lave the existing Delta ring in place. The VLTOR CASV EL hand guard is the extended length version and is avalable in Black or two-tone Foliage Green and Black or Flat Dark Earth and Black. The unit is machined from aluminum, hardcoat anodized with stainless steel mounting hardware. The CASV EL is  13-7⁄8″ (35.2cm) OAL, 2-1⁄8” (5.4cm) wide, 2¾” (7cm) high without bolt-on rails attached.
