M-14 magazines have been manufactured for over 50 years in the USA, Taiwan and Communist China. The quality of the various offerings varies dramatically. You can never have too many magazines for a rifle, but this is one area where trying to cut costs can be seriously counter productive. There are a lot of inferior magazines out there as this article will explain.
Only Check-Mate industries currently make M-14 magazines for the US Government and they are some of the best ever made. Check-Mate M-14 magazines are made to exact tolerances in 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 round format. Some 25 rounders are in service with US forces, but these were probably privately purchased and finding pouches to suit them can be problematic.
The 5 rounds is mandatory for hunting in some states but can be problematic to remove from the rifle as it is flush fitting. The best way to remove the 5 rounder is to fill with 5 rounds from above and press down on the top round whils pressing the mag releasee catch to push the magazine out. This is not a defect of the magazine or the rifle which was never intended to take a flush fitting magazine. The 10 and 15 rounders are good for general target shooting, particularly from a bench as the 20 and particularly the 25 round M1A magazines can give insufficient clearance for prone and benchrest shooting.
The Check-Mate M14 magazines are all steel, welded with a precision wound spring. The carbon steel versions are Parkerized and the stainless steel units having a satin stainless to shiny stainless finish which can be painted or Duracoated if necessary. The stainless units have a teflon coated steel follower to avoid galling and these tough magazines feature a removable floorplate to aid cleaning.
